Our Strategic Plan (2026-2028)

Over the next three years, Second Harvest will reshape the way Canada thinks about — and acts on — food waste and food insecurity. When we reach our goals, millions of people across Canada will have access to fresh, healthy food that would otherwise go to waste, and communities from coast to coast to coast will feel the difference.

Priority #1: Rescue More Food, Feed More People

What we want to do:

How we’re going to do it:

  • Rescue more food and get it where it's needed most
    We’ll expand our national food recovery efforts to ensure fresh, healthy food reaches people in every corner of Canada, from big cities to rural towns to remote northern communities. No matter where someone lives, they should have access to good food.
  • Harnessing Technology to Fight Food Waste
    ‍    We’re using artificial intelligence to strengthen every part of our food rescue operations — from forecasting supply and demand, to optimizing logistics, to improving how we connect with partners. This technology helps us make smarter, faster decisions so that more good food is rescued, less goes to waste and more people get the nourishment they need.
  • Turning Farm Surplus into Year-Round Support
    We’re making it easier for surplus farm food to reach people who need it, not just at harvest time, but all year long. By investing in regional processing and co-packing partnerships, we can turn bulk produce into ready-to-use formats that are easier for community organizations to store, cook and distribute. It’s one more way we’re building a stronger, more reliable food support system for Canadians.

Priority #2: Be a Catalyst for Change

What we want to do:

Lead a nationwide movement to dramatically reduce food waste and hunger by changing public attitudes, shaping policy and strengthening the charitable sector.  

How we’re going to do it:

  • Change the conversation
    We’ll use research, media campaigns and thought leadership to make food waste and food insecurity impossible to ignore — turning awareness into action.
  • Shape systems that work for people and the planet
    By working with government and industry, we’ll push for smarter policies that reduce waste and build a stronger, more sustainable food system.
  • Support frontline organizations
    We’re launching Canada’s first Safe Food Handler Certification designed specifically for non-profits — giving community organizations the tools and training they need to safely rescue and distribute more food.
