Why Volunteering at Second Harvest Is a Commitment That Connects

After his professional career, Michael Grimes was looking for a meaningful way to give back, something with structure and purpose. Over the past two years, he’s become a dedicated and reliable member of the Second Harvest volunteer community.

Michael’s first shift was writing thank you notes to donors, but it didn’t take long for him to get involved in other areas. Over time, he’s taken on a variety of roles, including supporting delivery routes as a driver’s assistant.

“I get an awful lot of enjoyment when I go out on the truck, it keeps me grounded,” Michael shared. “I’m always really excited when I know which driver I’m going to be with and which route it’s going to be, just to get back and see people I’ve met at the [non-profit partner locations].”

Out on the road, Michael has seen how much relationships matter. Drivers work at an efficient pace, but still make time to connect with non-profit partners and understand their needs.

For Michael, that human connection is just as important as the logistics. It’s how he knows the food is not only reaching the right places, but truly supporting the people who need it.

He carries that perspective into the warehouse, leading food sort teams with intention and care, and making sure every volunteer understands their time and effort will make a tangible difference to someone in the near future.

“They’re doing something that’s going to have meaning for an individual the next day,” Michael explained.

That shared sense of purpose is what Michael believes makes the experience so enjoyable.

“The folks that are here volunteering want to be here volunteering,” Michael said.

For Michael, it comes back to the collective impact of showing up and working together.

“One person may not be able to change the world, but you geta bunch of one-persons and the sum of the parts really adds up,” Michael continued, “I’m just one cog in the wheel. I enjoy the team and the camaraderie that comes with it and at the end of the day I know it’s making someone’s life a little better.”

Michael noted that Second Harvest offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities, and that there is something for everyone looking to get involved.

“My advice is to just start volunteering,” Michael said,“Figure out what makes you happy and fulfilled while contributing to your community. Get a day one in so you can have a second day.”
