Participate in a 2-hour food sort shift followed by a 1-hour education session while enjoying a catered lunch in our Second Harvest Classroom. Participants have the option to choose one of our core workshops (Reducing Food Waste at Home, Busting Date Labelling Myths, Planning Nutritious Meals on a Budget or Food Safety Basics).

*Food sorts are a unique opportunity for groups to help prepare Second Harvest food donations for delivery to non-profit organizations across the GTA. Teams learn about the impact of community involvement while ensuring Second Harvest’s partners receive the food they rely on. A Second Harvest food sort facilitator will guide your group for the duration of your shift, with the option to participate in a shared or private experience.

Food Sort Plus includes a 2-hour food sort shift and 1-hour education session (Reducing Food Waste at Home, Busting Date Labelling Myths, Planning Nutritious Meals on a Budget, or Food Safety Basics.)

Days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (other days may be available by request)

Times: 9:30am to 12:30pm or 1:00pm to 4:00pm

Requirements: 10-50 volunteers per shift (25 people max. in each sorting space), 16+ years of age

Food safety is essential to protecting ourselves and our communities. This training session will explore practical, safe food handling practices to use in your kitchen at home.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:  

• Store food safely  
• Prevent cross-contamination
• Thaw food safely
• Measure food temperatures
• Cool and reheat foods safely

With food prices continuing to rise and many households feeling the pressure, learning how to make the most of a grocery budget can make a real difference. In this training session, participants will enhance their knowledge of healthy eating with a budget-friendly lens to plan nutritious meals.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:  

• Use practical tips to eat well on a budget
• Apply meal planning principles to save time and money  
• Navigate helpful apps and websites for meal planning and grocery shopping  
• Identify whether a food product is Canadian

Best before dates are a major driver of food waste. In this training session, participants will dive into the world of food date labelling practices in Canada and dispel food date labelling myths.  

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:  

• Understand the differences between “best before” and “expiry” dates
• Identify when food is safe to eat

Each year, Canada wastes enough food to feed 17 million people, at a time when people are accessing charitable food programs in record numbers. In this training session, participants will learn about the key findings of Second Harvest's research report, The Avoidable Crisis of Food Waste: Update. We’ll explore how much good food is lost, what Second Harvest is doing to address it and what individuals can do every day to be part of the solution.  

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:  

• Understand the scale of Canada’s food waste crisis  
• Apply practical storage tips to keep food longer  
• Confidently interpret best before dates to avoid unnecessary waste
